Abstract
This presentation explores the connections between health, environment, and well-being within human-made infrastructure in the context of the role of the civil engineer. The presentation will explore how we can enhance environmental sustainability and community well-being by emphasizing culturally and contextually relevant, community-driven approaches. Covering topics in engineering, in relation to health and policy, the discussion will highlight the importance of integrating local perspectives in sustainable development, exploring historical civil engineering design, and offering insight into current and future approaches to building sustainable communities.

Dr. Kerry Black, Ph.D., P.Eng
Dr. Kerry Black is an Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering. She holds a B.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto, an M.A.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph. Her research focuses on sustainable infrastructure and community well-being, particularly in collaboration with Indigenous communities. Dr. Black integrates engineering principles with policy and socio-economic components to promote healthy and resilient communities
