Abstract
With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, Biomedical Engineering researchers at the University of Calgary started work on various projects to help ease the situation, from developing a novel, low-cost, easy-to-produce respirator to 3-D printing of safety masks for healthcare workers. The various projects undertaken and their current status will be described.
Bio
Dr. Michael Kallos
Dr. Michael Kallos is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary. He is the lead of the University’s strategic research theme “Engineering Solutions for Health”, which brings together over 300 researchers across campus tackling problems in human and animal health and wellness. He has been involved in Biomedical Engineering for the past 20 years, including his prior role as Director of the multi-faculty Biomedical Engineering Graduate program for 12 years. His own work focusses on the development of processes to grow large numbers of stem cells in bioreactors so they can be used in treatments to help combat various diseases.
