Abstract
With an ever-increasing focus on green technology and power generation, CHP can play a major role in decarbonizing our energy sector. Generating electricity locally and capturing heat traditionally rejected to atmosphere, can improve the overall efficiency of our energy system and enable the usage of intermittent renewables by providing a reliable source of consistent power. CHP using natural gas as a fuel source can displace higher emitting grid resources whilst providing stability and security to a power system that may be subject to outages caused by unavailable renewables or extreme weather events.
Extreme weather events account for over 70% of power disruption and as these events increase, CHP can deliver power and heat that are essential to normal life. CHP fuelled by natural gas is a resilient energy source that is less likely to experience impacts of extreme weather events than other distributed generation. CHP can provide a reliable energy source for localized generation and also as part of a microgrid, again enabling the use of intermittent renewable energy sources without compromising stability. The ability of CHP systems to come online quickly can only strengthen grid resilience by providing a faster system response and recovery.
