Abstract
The Crowchild Trail Bridge forms part of a six-lane major arterial corridor providing northbound and southbound service along Crowchild Trail over the Bow River, CPR right-of-way, and 10th Avenue SW in Calgary, Alberta. The 315m long bridge was constructed between 1965 and 1966. The City of Calgary had identified the need to rehabilitate the structure to extend its service life. At the same time, the City was undertaking the Crowchild Trail Corridor Study to review the functional needs of the entire corridor. During the preliminary phase of the rehabilitation design, the opportunity to improve the function of the Crowchild Trail Bridge and the adjacent road network was identified, which required the widening of the bridge from six lanes to eight lanes.
The widening of the river bridge was achieved through the addition of girder lines and the modification of existing substructure. Notable challenges included the extension of the pier cap cantilevers to carry the additional lanes, assessment of the river pier foundations for the added loading to minimize in-stream impacts, renewal of the existing substructure to address areas of deterioration, and construction of significant retaining structures to support the reviews roadway geometry.
The functional improvements also required the widening and rehabilitation of the adjacent Memorial Drive Overpass, a three span, 44 m long cast in place concrete bridge. In addition to the design challenges, the project also required careful consideration for construction staging to maintain traffic service on Crowchild Trail.
The presentation will discuss the evolution of the project and touch on several of the design and construction highlights. The project was completed on time and on budget and keep traffic moving at all times.
