Abstract

Water level monitoring provides essential information about the condition of aquifers and their responses to water extraction, land-use change, and climatic variability. It is important to have a spatially distributed, long-term monitoring well network for sustainable groundwater resource management. Community-based monitoring involving citizen scientists provides an approach to complement government-run monitoring programs. This approach was implemented in Rocky View Well Watch network in 2007. In this network, community volunteers measure the water level in their wells, and enter these data through a web-based data portal, which allows the public to view and download the data. The long-term data set has been useful for monitoring seasonal and interannual responses of groundwater to the variability in weather conditions, and for developing the scientific understanding of groundwater systems.

Bio

Dr. Masaki Hayashi, Ph.D.

Dr. Masaki Hayashi is a professor in the Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment at the University of Calgary. He received his B.Sc. and MSc. in earth sciences from Waseda University and Chiba University, respectively, in Japan and his Ph.D. in earth sciences from the University of Waterloo in Canada. His main research interests are in the connection among groundwater, surface water, and atmospheric moisture in various environments ranging from the prairies to the mountains.
