Abstract
The Prince of Wales fort is the largest fort ever built by a private company (the Hudson’s Bay Company): it lies at the mouth of the Churchill river opposite Churchill, Manitoba. Constructed in the 1700’s, the fort is now a National Historic Site. Parts of the walls have bowed and collapsed in some places so conservation measures have been undertaken to restore the structure. The history of the fort will be reviewed briefly, the problems described and conservation possibilities explored.
Bio
Dr. Nigel Shrive, Ph.D.
The presentation will be given by Nigel Shrive. He has retired from being a Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Calgary after some 45 years, serving two five-year terms as head of the Department and teaching structures and materials. In recent years he introduced two new graduate courses on the conservation of historic structures for structural engineers, being the first such courses in North America.
