Abstract

We take water for granted, assuming the supply is endless but it isn’t. The talk will deal with water quantity and quality issues in an attempt to raise awareness of this precious but under- appreciated resource.

Bio

Dr. Doreen Barrie

Doreen Barrie is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Calgary.

The courses she has taught include Canadian Politics, Alberta Politics, Political Parties, Federalism and the Politics of Water.

Her Master’s thesis compare American and Canadian Political culture and her Ph.D. dissertation was a comparison of Canadian and Australian federalism.

Her publications include a textbook she co-authored Canadian Politics Today: Democracy, Diversity & Good Government, a book The Other Alberta: Decoding a Political Enigma and a biography on former Premier Ralph Klein for the book Alberta Premiers of the Twentieth Century. She has a keen interest in political literacy and has produced citizens’ guides on topics that include health care and the parliamentary system. She is working on one on Water Literacy. Because she believes that democracy demands an informed public, in addition, to her academic work, she has done a number of talks and webinars for community groups to help them make sense of policy issues.

She was the first Canadian President of the Western Social Science Association in the United States.
