Abstract

3D Printing has evolved in the past decades from a specialty tool for academic research, to an ever-growing industry of on-demand Prototype and Additive Manufacturing service providers and manufactures of desktop devices for professionals and makers.  

In this presentation we review some of the history and evolution of 3D printing and look at different types of printable media from Filament and SLA to Metal and Meat. We will see how the technology is being used in the field of design engineering with examples of how I have used 3D printing in my practice as a mechanical design engineer to work through product development puzzles, make functional prototypes, and even for ramping up production.

Bio

John Persson, P.Eng.

John Person is the President and Principal Engineer at Box 13 Engineering Ltd, and founding partner in FUEL Biomedical Inc., a medical device development company based in Calgary.  John is a local industry veteran and entrepreneur, working as a Mechanical Design Engineer and Project Leader specializing in New Product Development, mechanical system simulation, regulatory clearance, and device design and development since 2000.  His diverse experience working directly with businesses to manage technical teams and designing equipment for medical device applications, aircraft ground support, oilfield, compression, downhole tools, and consumer products has helped clients turn their ideas into profit generating technology. 

John holds a Master of Applied Science in Engineering (Biomedical) from the University of British Columbia (2000), A B.Sc. with Distinction in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba (1997), is a professional engineer registered with APEGA, and is an Avenue Calgary Top 40 Under 40 alumni.
